Psychotherapy For Children

Children are special people.   They learn about themselves and the world through play and the arts.  Play and the Creative/Expressive Arts enable children to self-express what they carry on the inside.  Children do not have the ability to shape their inner experience, their emotional life, their mental processes, their spiritual encounters through words.  However, the gift of the creative process with an experience therapeutic guide allows for an opening into their self-expression and their own narrative or story:
  • What is your child telling him/herself on the inside about his/her experience?
  • What beliefs is he or she  making from their experience?
Together with me, an experience expressive arts therapist, we allow a brave space for this expression to come forward.  The expressive and creative therapeutic process, for the child,  builds a helpful learning tool, brings on a new perspective  and expands their voice,  building self-confidence and self-worth.  It also supports:
  • more relaxation reducing anxious thoughts
  • increased openness to play, create, communicate and share
  • trust build for themselves and with the therapist
  • increase a better sense of self
  • a safe place to be seen and to  express  concerns.

In this way, the child opens up to their inner resources and shares the inner stories outwardly.  The arts and play become the vehicle for understanding, for supporting, for making connections, for self-discovery, for self-expression and for growth.  Through the rapport building with the expressive arts therapist ( arts psychotherapist) a safe space is created for the unfolding of a supportive creative process.  Both the child and the Therapist use the symbolic language of the visual arts and/ or of music soundscapes and/ or of dramatic storytelling  and/or of movement to bring out the child's authentic and creative voice.

Visual Arts

Through Painting, Drawing and using a variety of different media, a creative story unfolds. It is in the allowing of this creative process to occur does change happen.  Not only from this moment to moment experience with the shaping of visual images but also through the relationship with the Therapist.  Together an alliance is formed and the child has an ally into shaping what is most present for the child.  The relationship builds this experience of bonding, of joining with and of not being alone with what is concerning, distracting and overwhelming.

Music Making and Sounding

Through music making, the child develops a new experience of unleashing their creative potential while being guided and supported by the Therapist.  The co-creation of the creative process allows value and importance for the child's experience.  The child gets to experience themselves as creative genius. This experience and the shaping of being a co-creative music maker gives confidence, resource and supports the child in their individuality and life situation.

Symbolic Storytelling

Externalizing what is current for a child through symbolic storytelling allows the child a break from the intensity of life.  Whether through a conscious talking process or tapping into the child's unconscious thoughts, behaviours or beliefs, storytelling is a creative purge of the intensity.  This fees up a space for the child to re-discover themselves as able and capable.  The cfreative process informs the child of the wonder, power and growth through co-creative building and exchange.

"I can't express how happy I am. Today I was reminded of who I am. I've been hiding for far too long. Thank you to you for sharing everything today.

My kids, husband and myself have noticed a change, things that normally made me lose it, I was able to communicate to the kids calmly.
